What Exactly Does the "A Plate" Mean?

If you have ever noticed a truck on the highway with a white plate and a large black letter "A", you have seen a vehicle transporting waste. This marking is mandatory under European law, and the term originates from the German word Abfall, which means waste.

• Clear Visibility on the Road: Every truck carrying waste must display this plate on both the front and rear. This allows police and road enforcement authorities to immediately identify what the vehicle is transporting.

• Mandatory Abroad: This marking is essential primarily for cross-border transport (for instance, through Austria and Germany), where fines for unmarked vehicles are extremely high.

• Cargo Differentiation: The plate clearly indicates that the truck is not carrying standard commercial goods, but waste materials that require distinct regulatory oversight.

Unlike standard freight transport, the transport of hazardous waste requires strict conditions to protect nature and ensure full traceability:
